In Mark 12:28-34, we have the account of a scribe asking Jesus, “Which is the first commandment of all?” According to Matthew’s account of the same occasion, the purpose of the scribe’s question was to try Jesus. But even though he came with an ulterior motive, Jesus said to him, “Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.” Why did the Lord tell him that and what does it mean? What does the Bible say?
